In 2024, a surge of new threats has jeopardized the integrity of financial markets, as rogue actors employ increasingly sophisticated techniques to manipulate markets and evade regulatory scrutiny.
In response, regulators have heightened their expectations, pushing market participants to develop long-term strategies that reinforce compliance controls and processes. However, many firms continue to rely on outdated and fragmented technology for operational supervision.

The original "Rogue Trader" is back. After captivating our London audience at Regs & Eggs 2023, Nick Leeson is making his way to America to provide a riveting account of the events that led to the downfall of Barings Bank, one of the most notorious financial scandals in history.
Nick Leeson single-handedly caused the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995. Through unauthorized and speculative trades, Leeson accrued losses totaling $1.3 billion. He was arrested and sentenced to six-and-a-half years in a Singaporean prison.
When the Bank collapsed, it was described as a wake-up call and a warning to the industry that something like this could never happen again. Yet, more than two decades later, we continue to see cases of rogue trading, bank failures, and financial scandals. At the heart of almost all scandals lies human error and poor judgment.
Nick will speak about the lack of controls, oversight, and accounting safeguards that ultimately led to the collapse of Barings Bank. He will also discuss the importance of compliance, governance, and culture in the financial sector and how firms today can avoid a similar fate as Barings Bank.
In 2024, the benefits of leveraging future-proofed technology in market surveillance are undeniable.
Modern technologies leveraging advanced statistical analytics, AI, and cloud computing have pushed the boundaries of what is possible within market surveillance and are generally well accepted by regulators. Yet, industry-wide adoption has been slow up to this point.
Whether it is concerns around model explainability, the perceived skills gap with new technology, or a tendency toward risk aversion, many firms have chosen to stick with outdated and fragmented legacy systems. However, this reliance on antiquated technology has created vulnerabilities that bad actors are now exploiting, using these loopholes to evade regulatory oversight.
Bank of America’s Head of Surveillance, Global Compliance and Operational Risk, Niki Fotheringham, will address her peers at Regs & Eggs to rethink their approach to market surveillance. She will highlight how far technology has come and argue that the time for innovation is now.
With over 25 years of experience in financial service, including more than 15 years in surveillance, Niki is a firm believer that advanced technology can be a powerful tool in the battle against market abuse. Prior to joining Bank of America, Niki served as the Global Head of Surveillance at HSBC Bank. Her remit has included surveillance across trade, electronic communications, and voice.
Originally from Scotland, Niki has held multiple senior Compliance roles in both London and New York, with a focus on monitoring and investigatory practices. Niki is also a strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which she firmly believes helps her ability to lead others and also create a culture of compliance.
Moderating this panel, Niki will engage with esteemed compliance leaders to explore the current state of market surveillance across the industry. The discussion will cover the technologies that firms are utilizing, the challenges they encounter, and their projections for the next 3-5 years. Attendees will gain practical insights into the real-world application of advanced surveillance tools and a forward-looking perspective on the future of compliance technology.

We launched our Regs & Eggs event series in 2017 - inviting industry experts to share their insights and views on the latest regulatory topics over breakfast (eggs to be specific). Our most recent event was hosted at London's House of Commons in June 2024. The breakfast featured Lord Daniel Finkelstein OBE as a keynote guest and brought together expert speakers from PWC, Baird, TD Securities, and more. These events aim to share knowledge and facilitate discussions with industry leaders about the key factors that impact financial services compliance.
By popular demand, SteelEye's flagship event returns to New York City, where North American compliance professionals will have a chance to participate in this highly regarded gathering. Attendees will hear from industry experts, gaining insights into the future of financial compliance as well as strategies that they can deploy to ensure long-term success within their firm. Hosted 60 floors high in Manhattan's Financial District, participants will experience a world-class breakfast while enjoying breathtaking views of the New York City skyline.
